Thanks, I guess?

Yesterday, Luke and I walked past a yard full of young children. They were all cooing over the "big doggy" so I brought him over to say hi. One particularly rambunctious girl with short wispy blond hair was quite the chatterbox with us.

"Are you on a walk?"

"Yes, we're on a walk."
"What's his name?"
"His name is Luke."
"Is he a boy?"
"Yes, he is a boy."
A woman who was maybe her mom or babysitter interrupted, "What does the name Luke sound like? Of course it's a boy. But... I guess you never know these days. I mean, we know a girl named Mikey."
"How old is he?"
"Four. How old are you?"
"I'm FIVE!" she proudly proclaimed as she held up only four fingers.
The woman interrupted again, "You are not five. You are four."
The girl seemed unfazed by the correction. She was quiet for a moment as the other children surrounding Luke continued to carefully pet him.
"IFYOUWEREADOGGYIDPETYOU!" she screamed to me so quickly that I honestly had not one clue what she was trying to say.
"I'm sorry, I didn't catch that. What did you say?"
"IF YOU WERE A DOGGY, I'D PET YOU!"
"Oh...?"
The woman interrupts again, "You apologize to her! I'm sorry, she's in a very weird mood today."
"Sorry."

I really didn't understand what about her comment was an insult, but I smiled and told her we'd visit again. Luke was growing nervous as more and more children crowded around us. We continued our walk as I laughed silently to myself and pondered if I should be offended.

Ha, I don't think that's offensive! I think Mama Bear needs to let her little four or five-year old be a kid and say silly things as long as she's nice :)

Yeah I'm pretty sure that's just Mama being a little overzealous. I think wanting to pet you is cute and 4 (or 5) year olds would see it that way too

Haha I think that means she thinks you're pretty!!!

Maybe it's more of the fact that she screamed it?! Her mom is probably just being extra cautious with teaching her manners. But I think it's cute too.

I have to second Becky's comment on that - I doubt it was an insult :)

Also - except for the screaming, that's a pretty adorable encounter.

I dunno. Petting is a good thing, right?

At least in high school.

What?

that's so cute! i think i just enjoy the random-blurting aspect of it. she couldn't contain her feelings enough to use a normal volume. :)

there are two young girls who are in the play i'm in. one is six and one is about four. they had the following conversation the other night before rehearsal:

girl #1: that's my little brother. he's... [calls to mom] HOW OLD IS HE? [to girl #2] he's almost one.
girl #2: well... is he zero?!?
girl #1: no, he's eleven months.

you could see the look of realization slowly creep across girl #2's face... it was priceless, and adorable to watch.

of course! if he's not one, he MUST be zero! :)

As a proud aunt of a five year old (who is in my care this weekend) I would say she wasn't trying to be rude. She was obviously enthralled with Luke and you as Luke's mama. So, she was just letting you know. :) So cute! So not ready for my own kids, but I love having them and returning them to their parents.

I don't think it's offensive either. I think it's nice. Or crazy. Also, greyhounds are so damn cute! I love them!
